North Lindsey College and Kingsway Training Ltd were pleased to catch up with Elliott from Virgin Care Sexual Health North Lincolnshire to find out how taking on two Apprentices has helped service run more smoothly, and been instrumental in the achievement of key performance outcomes.
Can you tell us a bit about Virgin Care Sexual Health North Lincolnshire and why you chose to engage with the services of North Lindsey College and Kingsway Training Ltd
Virgin Care provides Sexual Health and Contraception Services for the whole population of North Lincolnshire, aged 13 and over. Although the majority of the work we do is directly looking after patients, we also have various non-clinical tasks, and this is where apprentices were able to help us with results management, partner notification and other general office tasks.
We see more than 1000 patients per month, so the task of sending results to patients, following up with other appointments and advice where it’s needed, and informing patterns that might need treatment is a lot of work.
This is why we looked into Business Apprentices from North Lindsey College.
One of our objectives at Virgin Care Sexual Health North Lincolnshire is to:
Make sure that we do everything we can to receive results from the pathology laboratory within 7 days of sending the specimens to them
Patients with positive chlamydia tests should then be informed of the result within 2 days, and the work the two apprentices who joined us from North Lindsey College helps us achieve those objectives. They’ve fitted in really well into the team and they’ve been a tremendous help: on reception duties, general administration and results management.
They’ve really enjoyed the work and going into college; we’ve also given them the opportunity to expand their roles, as we noticed they were getting on really well with the young people who use our service; both apprentices have now been able to take patients through the chlamydia screening process.
We are interested to hear what impact taking on the apprentices has had back in the workplace.
The two apprentices from North Lindsey College have had such a positive effect on the service, they’ve brought bags of energy and enthusiasm with them and their work has also allowed us to send results to patients even more quickly.
For us, that’s crucial because not only does it man we are achieving our objectives of notifying patients within 2 days but patients are also telling us how pleased they are with the service, and the speed.
Are there particular areas of the overall experience working with the College and Kingsway Training you would like to highlight and what has been of most value to you and your organisation?
The service from North Lindsay College has been excellent. The response from the college from our first enquiry was rapid and a meeting was set up. All information was given to us and we very quickly had the names of some applicants ready to interview. The whole process was made very simple and the staff have been very friendly and helpful, especially Palvinder Salhan and Karen Hughes.
