Buttonswood Timber Ltd is a small family business located in Winterton. Darren Smith director of Buttonswood contacted North Lindsey College in june 2014 as they were interested in growing their business and therefore wanted to explore the option of taking on an apprentice.
Jo Gibson, Senior Business Development Officer, met with director Darren Smith to discuss the process of taking on an apprentice and the funding available to help small businesses with the financial cost of doing this.
Darren decided that with the help of the AGE grant from the SFA of £1500 and the construction grant from North Lincolnshire Council of £3000 he would be able to create a role for an apprentice. Through working closely with the construction team at North Lindsey College a number of students were offered the chance of a work experience placement at Buttonswood which for the successful student would become an apprenticeship.
After trailing a number of students Buttonswood decided to offer the apprenticeship to North Lindsey College student Benjamin Wilson. Ben started his apprenticeship with Buttonswoods Timber in June 2014. Ben is studying an Intermediate apprenticeship in Site Carpentry. Ben attends college one day a week to complete his technical certificate and to build his portfolio of evidence and is then working with his employer for the rest of the week to develop technical and practical skills within the industry.
Darren said: “With the help from Jo, Stuart and their team at North Lindsey College, Buttonswood have been able to take on an apprentice”.
“Our apprentice, Ben, has been a great member of our team and has fitted in easily here at Buttonswood. The apprentice has benefited the business”.
